  • Do not know when the wedding will be
You can apply for a passport in your married name. The passport cannot be used until after the date of the wedding. If the wedding is the 26th and you are flying out on the 27th this will be fine, just make sure you book your tickets in your married name. This will cancel your current passport so only do this if you are not going abroad before the wedding.

You can also keep your passport in your maiden name and fly with that but you will need to take your marriage cirtificate with you if you and make sure you book your tickets in your maiden name. However this is not as straight forward as it seems as it really does depend where you are going on honeymoon as some countries require visas and that is where things get complicated.

The best thing to do is ring the passport office and ask their advice, they are very helpful and will advise you of the best thing to do (whether to get a passport in your married name or not). i think this is the number
0300 222 0000.

It doesn't matter what name is on the passport as long as it matches what is on the tickets. You can change your name (I believe up to three months beforehand, but you need a specific form (which I believe you can get from the person marrying you). Someone I know got married a year ago, and still travels in her maiden name!

Are you going to be using the passport before you get married?

I'm also getting married next May and my passport's in date and because of my job it's going to be a faff to change my name to my married name straight away.

I'm not too bothered about travelling under my maiden name on honeymoon so we've booked it all as Miss Stanbridge but we're taking a copy of our marriage certificate for the hotel.

I've then got 3 days at home before I go back to work to sort out changing my name.

Hope that makes sense, I've only just woke up lol xx

@mrsjeffrey2be I'm sure I read somewhere that whatever name you booked your holiday in will also need to be on your passport (so it;s your decision whether to keep old maiden name and passport or get new one). There was a really useful post on this http://www.finalstitch.co.uk/forum/thread/change-of-names-on-passport-before-... and if you are going to do it here http://www.finalstitch.co.uk/forum/thread/what-to-do-about-passport/.
This link was really useful too http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Passports/Applyingforyourfirst...

Why give yourself more stress and more expense by altering your passport before the wedding. Book your holiday with your maiden name, travel on your old passport then change it when you get home. Definitely take a copy of your wedding certificate with you as @accidentallyme says. Hotels are cracking down on couples saying it's their honeymoon when in fact it's a fib to get freebies. xxx

 @mrsjeffrey2be
If you book your honeymoon in your maiden name you can just use your current passport.
However if you book the honeymoon in your married name then your passport must match.

You can apply for a passport in your married name now and if possible have it signed by the person who will perform the wedding ceremony, which will allow you to go on honeymoon straight away.

@mrsjeffrey2be I am a check-in supervisor for Emirates at Gatwick airport and we see this on a daily basis. Generally it's always best to book your trip with the name stated in your passport, so Goodwin. However, you can travel as Jeffrey as long as you take your marriage certificate along with you (original document not photocopy) because you are holding proof that you are the same person.

As the other girls have said you can apply for a passport in your soon-to-be married name 3 months before the date of the wedding but it is not valid until the day after you get married and it has to be signed by the registrar or priest who is marrying you.

Personally I am not going to change my passport until it expires in 2020 and I'm getting married in 2013 so I'll have 7 years of travelling with my marriage certificate in my passport.

Hope this helps xxx
