For fear of sounding silly...I was having a think earlier and was wondering what people have to do with their passports when they get married and then jet off on honeymoon straight afterwards? Do you get it changed into your married name before the wedding or just travel in your maiden name? Or doesn't it matter? Not sure how strict they are likely to be....xx

I've booked my honeymoon in mx maiden name to make life easier. Just take a copy of your marriage certificate to make the most of any just married offers the hotel might give you. x

sam2710@mrsthompsontobe I will! Thanks for the tip! I thought that might be the case but then i thought, legally, I'm not my maiden name anymore, I'm my married name, therefore can I travel under it?? I think ive totally thought about it too much and over complicated it - thank you!x

munchkin79@sam2710 exactly what
@mrsthompsontobe said. Don't whatever you do is book the honeymoon in your married name if you don't think you'll have time to change your passport. You might end up buying a whole new ticket. X

laraandsteve@mrsmorrisontobe Good idea with the make up trial! I've booked mine under my married name too and just need to get the form ready for the registra to fill in.
@sam2710 You can travel on your old passport until it expires. One of my friends has been married 2 years but still books holidays in her maiden name (as she didn't want to get a new passport with years still left on it) then takes her marriage certificate. As long as the name on the ticket and passport match, you'll be OK x

gina130284@sam2710 We've booked the cruise in my maiden name - even though when I travel there I will be a Lewis and when travelling home I will be a Harvey. My passport is in Lewis and I will keep it this way until it runs out.
If you ask the person marrying you to sign your passport form in advance you can have your passport in your married name and can book the honeymoon in your married name too.

mysterymeg@gina130284 I am currently a Lewis too! I'm a little sad that I won't be anymore in 18 days... @sam2710 I am travelling under my married name (touch wood) I left applying for it a bit late. It went in a week ago and should arrive next week. I'm supposed to fly on the 31st - slightly nervous currently! @laraandsteve and @mrsmorrisontobe do it as soon as you can once you're within the three months as the waiting is stressful lol

laraandsteve@mysterymeg Oh dear! I don't envy you at the mo. My mum kept banging on about me doing it in case it didn't turn up on time. Worse case scenario, I'll drive to Peterbrough / Liverpool on the Monday as we fly on the Wednesday. Hope yours turns up!! xx

my passprot runs out the same month as we are getting married so i need to renew mine anyway. The post office gave me a form which the priest can fill in to confirm that we are getting married and i can get my new passprot in my new name rather than pay twice in 1 year. @sam2710

mysterymeg@laraandsteve mine came yesterday in the end - took 12 days in total, not as bad as I thought. I might actually get to go on my honeymoon after all lol

jezibella83@sam2710 you can book the honeymoon in your married name and have your passport in your maiden name but you MUST take your marriage certificate with you to the airport as it is a legal document to say you were Jo Bloggs but you're now Jo Smith. It has to be the original document, no photocopies. I'm a supervisor for Emirates airlines at Gatwick Airport and this is a very common occurrence and acceptable by every airline in the world. I've worked on Easyjet, Thomas Cook, Thomson and several other airlines and every day you see women turn up with a different name in the passport to what's in the booking. On Emirates we see honeymoon couples every day so are very familiar with this. Similarly women who get divorced and their passport is in their married name but have decided to go back to their maiden name so book their flight in their maiden name have to have their divorce paperwork with them. We also get people who have changed their name by deed poll and it's the same scenario.
In order to change your name in your passport you have to buy a whole new 10 year passport which costs around £80. My passport expires in 2020 so I'm not going to pay out for a new one I'm just going to book in my married name and keep my marriage certificate with my passport.
Trust me, I've worked on airport check in for 10 years.

jezibella83@boycee As per above comment you don't have to book your flight in the same name as your passport if you have official documents to prove your name change.

My passport expires in March, and was planning to have my passport renewed in my married name, so we can go on honeymoon as Mr & Mrs Grassie. It means I won't have a passport for a few months, but I'm not planning on going anywhere until then! If my passport wasn't due to expire, then I'd be doing as @jezibella83 suggests, and taking my marriage certificate with me. I just have to tell h2b to remember and book our honeymoon as Grassie, and not Grassie/Tod! I assume we can do this????
