 Hi all,

What exactly is the process for having a civil ceremony, in respect of say finding a venue - and then whats the process? I know you have to book your registra but what documentation do you need and whats the timescale for it all?

Thanks

Lucy

If you the venue you wish to get married in holds a liscence for weddings then ask them where the registrar normally comes from (normally their local registry office) where you can get in touch with them and book them.
What you will also need to do at your local registry office is give your notice to marry - you will need to provide 2 forms of ID, eg passport, birth cert, drivers license and 2 proofs of address.
You will be required to answer questions about yourself and your intended and pay £37.50 per person for the notice to be advertised and to get your license.
To find venues in which you can marry - google is your answer - you can also look on the councils websites for where they have registered venues.
Hope that helps!

@lucyb12345 They did ask both of us that at our interviews as they put it on the marriage licence. My H2B is the same as you and just said to them he didnt have a clue and they were fine about it, I think they are probably used to hearing that a lot nowdays so I wouldnt stress over it. x

@lucyb12345 We weren't asked it. To be fair, we weren't asked any questions really and sat in the same room throughout it. I did ask her why some people are asked other questions and moved to different rooms and apparently it's something to do with the borough and the amount of ethnic marriages taking place. Sheffield, which is 15 miles away, do all the questions and seperate room thing xx

So we were looking for our wedding to be in October 2013 and are starting to look at venues this weekend. Once we have found one , booked a date and paid a deposit, we then need to go and see the registra (even though it is so far in advance) or do we wait untill nearer the time?

@lucyb12345 You can book a date with your registrar at any time and (i think) you pay a small amount to secure it. However, if it's more than a year before the wedding date you won't have to do the interviews or pay for the notices until then. It's a legal thing. Get in contact with your local registrar to confirm it and then take it from there. They're normally really helpful. But remember to book them soon, especially depending on what time of year and day you're getting maried. 2pm in the middle of August is obviously very popular!

@lucyb12345 Most venues will provisionally hold a date for you for about 2 weeks where you don't pay a deposit but you speak to the registra and make sure they're free. Once you've spoken to them and done as @fabulousfebruary said then you pay the deposit to your venue. Have fun looking at venues emoticon

@fabulousfebruary is right, you can make a provisional booking with your registrars at any time before the wedding. I'm also getting married in 2013 (i'm an august bride though) and we booked our registrar months ago, I think it was around August/september last year. So they do accept provisional bookings and a deposit to confirm the date this far in advance. But you do have to move quickly because planning so far ahead is becoming really popular and we were told by our registrars office that if we hadn't booked when we did we may have ended up without a registrar because they were already taking a lot of bookings for August 2013.

i hope your venue hunt is successful at the weekend and more to the point, i hope you have fun doing it!
