 Hi Girls,

I was planning to get my make up done by a professional for the big day so that I didn't have to stress about looking awful (although I guess this is still a possibility, but hopefully not if I have a trial!)

Then today I was in Harrods, and had my make up done by the Benefit counter, I love there stuff and already have some, but they did it so quite and it looks lovely and natural, so I'm thinking of buying their products and doing it myself instead. Thing is all the products will probably work out quite expensive (£100+) but I will obviously be using them again!

But also I did want something a bit special for my big day! Wish I could just go there on the morning lol!

Any suggestions on what I should do? x

What I was hoping to do is to do what you did and go to Benefit or another make up stand and ask how to apply a really good base so it will all stay in place for the day, see how they apply it then practice myself! I would love for someone to do my make up for me but i'm very particular and i can imagine not liking it on the day and after all you know how your fiance likes the way you look from day to day when you do it yourself. Its true that you will use the products again and to save a bit of money look around on different sites to find benefit like even ebay and sites like cheapsmells.com as they are often a lot cheaper than buying from the counter. hope that helps a bit emoticon

@give_me_strength I am going to go to a few make up trials and see how they do it with my CB and then buy the products for her to do it for me so therefore its still a bit of a treat with someone else doing it but also not paying for it. The products may be expensive but I am going to ask for some of them for Christmas and Birthday presents and as you say they will last into the honeymoon and beyond for more amazing photos etc x

@kookiebek Thanks you're completely right and,
@sophie2bgillies I got my other benefit stuff from ebay before! Completely forgot! Just worried that on the day I will end up looking a mess and worrying - however, 2 of my bridesmaids are very good with their own make up - although they have very different styles to me! Might go to a few more counters first and see how it looks!

@give_me_strength I can't decide either! Was going to do it myself but then decided if I can't treat myself on my wedding day when can I. However I had a trial yesterday and think I may go back to original idea!!! I don't wear much make up normally and felt quite self conscious with so much on. It looked quite natural but so much foundation, I thought it made me look older as make up highlighted the creases (wrinkles!!!!) around my eyes. Think I may have a trip to make up counter at Boots and Debenhams and see how they compare.

Just been to a wedding fair and found out that benefit do a wedding day make-up for £50 for the bride and £30 for bridesmaids, plus a trial for £30 redeemable against products (although I already got one free in Harrods) and hen party sessions for £20 per person again redeemable against products! So might do some of these! I budgeted £100 so it would save me a lot! x

I was at a wedding fayre in Essex today and they also had a Benefit section there offering the same. I am a huge fan of Benefit make up, that's what most of my make up drawer consists of so Im really tempted by having them do the make up for myself and the bridesmaids for my wedding

@give_me_strength I'm doing my own because I have mild roascea and I don't trust someone else not to smother me in make up. I bought the new last all day foundation and that looks lovely - gives a great glow! With a nice glowy bourjouis blusher it looks as good as any professional.

I already have neutral eyeshadows and luckily I'm good at eye make up so sorted! Just need a lipstick... :]

@sophie2bgillies It's the Max Factor Lasting Performance. I haven't got the colour quite right yet, I went for natural beige but think I need one a little lighter.
http://www.maxfactor.co.uk/uk/products/Face/Foundations/LastingPerformance/de...

I also use 2tru powder from Superdrug - it's really cheap but doesn't cake on so the glow shows through but just helps to set the foundation.

The bourjois is rose de jaspe and shimmers rather than sparkles - it gives you the glow without glitter, I can't say enough about it! I absolutely love it.

A really great idea is to go on youtube.com and search "bridal make up" for some tips from the girls on there, or visit a store which does trials for you. I've always been good at eye make up from practicing in my teens so I've decided on a neutral beige with a slight shimmer for the whole eye, the crease in a neutral brown and grey to smoke it up a bit, and brown eyeliner. It's recommended not to use a sparkly highlighter as it won't look right in the pictures, so I'm not doing anything sparkly apart from a rosey shimmer colour in the centre of my eyelid which makes my eyes look a little bigger, plus LASHINGS of black mascara (but not jordan-like!)

I'm trying to find a rose lipstick which is close to my natural lip colour as I have quite big lips and don't want them to take over from my eyes!

Good luck! x

@mrsegan2b - Thanks will get on youtube- the one product i think i would definitely recommend for a lovely glow is benefit moonbeam its so lovely i just needed a good foundation to put with it! Think i'm doing the same with the eyes if not going for a slight dusky pink but to keep it very subtle. Thanks for the tips!

@kris1983 was also wondering about doing your own or professional make-up:
kris1983 Im kind of torn between paying somebody to do my make up or just doing it myself. I think doing your own is a good way to save some pennys but want to look amazing on the big day, what do you guys think?
30. Aug at 19:19

ruthee I'm doing mine coz I'm really fussy and want to look and feel like me not over made up since I rarely wear any make-up at all xx
30. Aug at 19:28

miss_d Hi Ruthee,

I am doing my own make up, I too don't wear a lot and I don't want to look too made up. Lots of people have said to me that if you don't wear it a lot you might not like having someone else make you up for the day as you might find it a bit too much.

I have found some brilliant make up that I am using, its a mineral make up thats so natural looking called bare minerals, you can get it in debenhams, house of fraiser. It covers up all the blemishes and gives a lovely even skin tone without making it look like you have a ton of make up on your face, it also feels light and i don't feel as if I am wearing make up at all, best of all It doesnt make me outbreak in spots!!
30. Aug at 19:48

stbmrscooper im doing my own as to be honest i dont like make up as i feel fake so proberly will only wear eye liner and a bit of lippy and thats bout all
30. Aug at 19:50

cicmatag @kris1983 I'm doing my own make up as well, for several reasons.
1. I don't like strangers fiddling around my face and especially eyes.
2. I like doing my make up, I don't wear it too often but when I do I like that I can get creative.
3. As you said it saves money.
4. During the day, especially as you have to kiss a lot of people, when your make up starts wearing off or your skin gets shiny or you need to touch up your eye liner or lipstick etc., once your make up artist is gone, that's it, you can't do the touch up with the same products/colours, unless you have the same products yourself. Whereas if you do your own make up, you can always carry a few essentials in your clutch bag (or your bridesmaid's bag) and touch up whenever needed.
There are plenty of tutorials on youtube, you can mix and match (eyes from here, cheeks from there etc.). I also found that visiting make up counters in Debenhams and other department stores really helps, the assistants there really know their stuff and can do your full make up. I normally get them to write down the products they've used on me so I can buy them later if I like the look (if you buy one or two items every month after pay day it's easier to manage).
So far I've had BeneFit, Clinique and Smashbox makeup done but intend to get a few more. Don't forget to take photos of the end result so you can re-create it later.
For me make up is great fun so I'll definitely be doing my own. x
30. Aug at 20:45

geordiebride I'm going to do my own, mainly cos I have allergies to allsorts so can't risk it with makeup I'm not used too! I am however a big make up fan and love having the works! So I'm going to treat myself to a Mac makeup lesson and some other make up sessions to get new ideas and buy some good products to use on the day! X
30. Aug at 20:50

gina130284 Yep I am but not through choice to be honest. There's no beautician (as far as I know) on the ship that were getting married on, so looks like I'll be doing my own.
I dont mind tho as I know what I like. I was MOH at a wedding last November and had my make up which I absolutely hated- I felt like a drag queen, but when I saw the photos it looked great!
30. Aug at 20:51

cicmatag @geordiebride that's a great idea, I'm really hoping groupon will do some deals for make up lessons in the near future
30. Aug at 21:12

kookiebek My bridesmaids and I did each others make up and that was really nice, we didn't have anyone intruding on our 'girly time' and also we had a few girly night practices with a lot of wine before hand to get it exactly how we wanted it.
I asked for a lot of the makeup as birthday and Christmas presents so it didn't cost me too much and I didn't feel guilty about buying 'luxury' products xx
30. Aug at 21:34

ruthee @miss_d Thanks for the tips I'll have a nosey for those in town at the weekend xx
30. Aug at 21:40

jen_kristin @kris1983 MAKE-UP ARTIST! I was going to do my own make-up but then my brothers girlfriend led me against it and said - get a professional, mainly because its very relaxing to have ur make-up done for you and her friend had got married and couldn't hold the eye-liner without shaking, cos she was so nervous/excited.
Yes it saves pennies, you are completely correct.....but its your wedding day, you only get one of them in a lifetime (hopefully) dont compromise, if you want a professional, get one. Of course I'm not dissing anyone who is doing their own, as its a personal choice, and some people just feel more at ease doing it themselves.
Have a trial, and if you really like what the make-up person has done then i say go for it. Spend it, ur the bride! and no doubt you've cut costs elsewhere in the wedding, you've earned yourself a bit of pampering after all that wedding planning ;)
30. Aug at 21:43

meeeshel I'm thinking I'm probably going to do my own; not sure I can afford a make up artist and as i don't wear much, not sure if it'll look too much!

@cicmatag I've signed up to pretty much every city on groupon and keep a good eye for lessons; there's been a few but i want one nearer the wedding so as soon as they get to nearer the wedding I'll post them on here x
30. Aug at 21:45

raewright I pretty much live in make up, I don't think I've left the house without it on in more than 10 years, I definitely don't have a face for no make up! As such, I'm more than happy doing my own. Not really from a cost point of view (I spent nearly £350 on MAC make up!) but just because I'm confident I can get the look I want by doing it myself. If someone else did it and it turned out wrong I'd be really frustrated, and just end up redoing it myself anyway. If you're not overly happy doing yours yourself, then having someone else do it might be quite nice for you. I don't normally like people touching my face but I felt totally comfortable having it done when I had a consultation. I would definitely recommend having one at a make up counter somewhere, even if you choose not to use a beautician on the big day, it could give you some good ideas for styles.
31. Aug at 00:13

loulabelle @kris1983 I done my own makeup.....I did have a trial but really hated it!! I found out that Benefit makeup counters have free makeup lessons! I had one...and it was brill. The main thing i wanted was a great foundation and some tips to make my eyes stand out. I took in everything she done and bought a few of the products that she used. I loved my makeup on the day! The foundation made my skin look flawless and you can really see that in my photos which is what you want really. xxxx
31. Aug at 09:44

kayren555 I am thinking of doing my own, purely because, my oh says no-one can bring my eyes out the way he likes them, like I can, that sold it to me, even though he was gonna pay for my makeup
31. Aug at 13:47

munchkin79 @cicmatag There's a London make up lesson on Groupon today. Don't know where you are based. x
31. Aug at 13:54

debbie33 im really lucky because my MOH is a professional makeup artist so she is doing everyones make up as a wedding gift i would say have some trials and see how you feel about someone else doing your make up xx
31. Aug at 14:32

shellywelly I did my own! Invested in better quality make-up than I'm usually bothered enough to go for, and was quite happy with it. I hate other people touching me, it would have ruined the day if I'd had to go through that so I'm glad I did my own
31. Aug at 16:42

cicmatag @munchkin79 I'm in Yorkshire so it's a bit far for me but I'm sure they'll do one near me soon. Or as @loulabelle said I could try the Benefit counter in Debenhams. They've done my makeup once already and I really liked it but had to wipe it all off before I could take a photo so might have to try again
31. Aug at 18:31

kris1983 I had a make up trial today at house of fraser, i think il def be doing my own make up wasnt loving the lady touching my face lol think i might just work my way around the different brands and choose the one that suits best
31. Aug at 18:48

mizza1987 i had my makeup done because i'm rubbish at doing my own and my skin is a bit hit and miss as just come off the pill - although thankfuly had no spots what soever on the day!! she used my own lipstick and powder thou so i could touch them up as they day went on i also got some shine wipes from boots that absorb the grease/oil/sweat and keep the matte look of your makeup and these were fab for noses and foreheads! xxx
31. Aug at 19:42

vintage_dream_wedding I also did my own make up, I had a trial and I looked like an extra from Twilight (but not in a good way!). I used mineral make up, good coverage and lasts all day, I used a spray on top that keeps your make up sliding off your face, it really did the trick, even my blusher stayed put all day. It was from boots by Urban Decay and was called All Nighter I think, I would really recommend it!! Cost less than a tenner!
31. Aug at 23:40

kayubi @kris1983 im doing my own make up but thats because im a make up artist and im waaaay too fussy lol. Whatever you decide, make sure its what you feel comfortable with. there are some terrible make up artists out there (ive heard a million horror stories in my career!) but there are also some amazing make up artists out there too. A good indication is to look at their make up and if you like their look the chances are theyll do a good job. Good luck and if you need any make up tips ive got almost 20 years of make up knowledge rattling around in my head lol xx
1. Sept at 00:10

missmaxine i havent decided yet, all depends on the cost, if i have it done pro then theyll prob put all the foundation and stuff on which i dont wear. so im not sure yet, think ill decide if i ever get a job lol
1. Sept at 10:50

portsmouthjen @jen_kristin Totally agree with you! I had someone come to do mine and it was lovely as I could sit back and relax with a glass of fizz and chat to my BMs while she did it all
1. Sept at 14:21

baldwin2bconnolly @kris1983 I'm really torn on this as i want a make-up artist as i dont wear make up very often and to be honest i dont think im that great at applying it. however when i have come to finding someone to do it local the prices they are charging for it are stupid!!! one place wanted £300!!!!! for what??? others are more reasonable but then i worry if they will be any good.......
1. Sept at 14:22

kris1983 @kayubi heres a question for you, who do you think does the best make up? Im doing various different make trials in House of Fraser to find one that i like, but who would u recomend?
1. Sept at 15:54

kris1983 @baldwin2bconnolly Blooming heck £300.00 thats a rip off I dont really wear make up on a day to day basis but always on a night out, so im going to just try and wing it
1. Sept at 15:55

baldwin2bconnolly exactly what i thought no way am i paying that..... i wear make up for nights out etc but nothing special......
@kris1983
1. Sept at 15:59

kerrie666 @kris1983 I'm having the make up artist come to my house just like what @portsmouthjen said I want to be able to relax and have a giggle with a glass of fizz the woman that's doing mine I go to all the time for my waxing and facials ect so we've become friends anyway and she said she will do it as a wedding gift.
1. Sept at 16:08

lf1975 This was a big dilemma for me too. I had a trial and absolutely hated it! So I went to Boots and had a make over at one of the counters. I felt so much better and much preferred what they did. I spent about £70 on make up but I still have that - it's nice to wear it now as it reminds me of our wedding day!

  • Do not know when the wedding will be
kayubi @kris1983 which house of fraser are you going to? to be honest it really depends on the person and not always the counter... Id steer clear of the girls who wear reaaly heavy make up on counter as youll probably end up looking the same. If youre coming to Westfield i work at Giorgio Armani Cosmetics in house of fraser, id be happy to do a trial for you and go through everything?? xx

tinks1985 After tonight i'm thinking that i will almost certainly be getting mine done professionally. I got a business card from a lady at the wedding fair at my venue tonight and i'm seriously impressed with her packages. Her website is www.makeupbyjodie.co.uk My sisters think she's expensive but i thought it was good. Maybe you girls can let me know what you think. The package i'm thinking of going for is her ultimate platinum package which includes:

A relaxing make up trial for the bride
wedding day make up for Bride, Mother of the bride and 4 adult bridesmaids
complimentary lip colour and powder for all
complimentary false lash application for all
glitter and gloss for the flowergirls
Make-up artist on hand till the end of all the daytime professional photos to do touch ups
20% discount voucher for all members of the bridal party for future bookings

Price: £335

I didn't think that was so bad, what do you girls think? Would you pay that much for that package or is it too much?

quoth_the_raven I did my own, but I've gathered a hell of a lot of tricks over the years with make up and I know what suits me. However; I also did a hell of a lot of research in the build-up. I had a few different free make-overs at make up counters to get an idea both of what other people might make me look like (at best chavvy, at worst like a sad panda) and what the make up itself was like (at best perfect, at worst like some sort of funereal mask from the Zhou Dynasty). I went through everything a bit at a time, too, so first up was foundation. I suffer from a strange condition wherein I'm a perfectly normal colour in real life, but on camera I appear bright red, as though I'm an enraged Smurf. I ended up trying about six different brands free, and taking a photo of each to see how well they stood up (Estee Lauder's Double Wear range won). I also did moisturiser, concealer and pore minimiser there. I put these on my Christmas list.

Then I picked a colour palette, and began with cheeks and lippy (Laura Mercier blusher and lipstick, Benefit's cheekbone highlighter "10"); followed this with eyeshadow, liner and mascara (Victoria Jackson, Lancome, Benefit respectively) and then put these on my birthday list. I got all but the lipstick and blusher, which I bought myself. I still have all of that make up, too, and will do for years yet, since I rarely wear make up. This worked out Very Nicely.

But, like I say, in spite of wearing it only when the stars align correctly and there's an R in the month, I know what I'm doing with make up. If I hadn't, I think I would have just splashed out on a professional and ticked it off my list of things to worry about. Lord knows it was a full enough list with MIL.

becky260512 Bobbi brown do special wedding makeup classes for £30 I have really fair skin and always look ghostly in pics with a flash cos it reflects off the pigments so I think ill have a few trials and see what t. I they say. I don't really like the idea of a stranger doin my makeup
3. Sept at 13:06

sebsbride @kris1983 I will def do my own. I might get someone in for my bridemaids (if they want) but for me it is important I look like myself on the day! Also doing my own hair as I've never met a hairdresser that can handle my hair before!
3. Sept at 14:08

kate2be I'm definitely having my make-up done, no way I would be able to put it on myself! I'm not very good at that sort of thing though! I have priced it around £110.00 for someone fairly local to me (chesterfield)
3. Sept at 15:15

mrsegan2b I had a trial and hated it too. Ended up doing my own and it was perfect, I gave myself an hour and a half to do it, it didn't take that long but it meant I would be relaxed and I was 100% happy with the results
3. Sept at 16:02

squeakypurple This is one of my biggest niggles! I wear make up everyday and experimenting with colours and blending is my thing. So I worry that a make up artist would try to make me look like a natural blushing bride which I would hate. Like @quoth_the_raven I went round picking up tips and tricks of the trade which was really, really useful. I had quite a few free makeovers from people at the lower end of the price scale (£100-£150) and they were really poor. They didn't even use primer to make sure the eyeshadow didn't stray. On the flipside, I refuse to pay £300 for an hour or two of someone's time. I decided to spend my ££s on loads of really nice skin care and clinique foundations and cover ups and things that I can practice with until the day.
However, I'm still worried that I'll get all flushed and nervous and shaky on the day. Humph. And if I have a really big spot that I can't do anything about... I'll just have to invest my money in photoshop and painstakingly edit myself!

katiedarlin i went for several trials and lessons at different clinique counters and over the space of a year bought all the skincare/make up i needed (i spent about 250) however i shopped arround to make sure i took advantage of offers eg buy 2 items get travel bag with little lipgloss/foundation etc in
that way i had a selection of tiny make up samples to take to the wedding in a bag as top ups.
my make up looked great eventhough it was a really hot day and i cried loads

  • Do not know when the wedding will be
@mrsd2012 was also wondering whether to DIY make up for wedding day or not:
I am just wondering what people thought of doing your own makeup for the wedding - my sister had hers done professionally and she regretted it - it wasnt what she wanted and yes she had a trial etc .. I feel happier doing my own make up just wondered if anyone felt as I do or should I just get it done professionally?

princess2be I think you should do what you feel comfortable with. I am going to do my own because I enjoy doing my makeup and i know the way i like to look. I dont want to look too different from what i normally do.
I would say go for it yourself! If your good at doing it then why not?

mrscoops @mrsd2012 i think if you feel more comfortable and more relaxed doing your own then go for it I think there are a lot of ladies on here that have done their own. I am luck my MOH is a beautician/make up artist and has offered to do it for me. I think if I had to have someone I didnt know do it I would have felt uncomfortable and done mine myself. Do whatever is going to make you most relaxed on the day I think. xx
Yesterday at 13:18

katiedarlin i did my own was really happy with it and i know have a nice makeup bag full of fancy make up i wouldnt of bought without the excuse. i had lots of trials at clinique counters until i got an idea of how i wanted my eyes then practiced doing it a few times before the big day
Yesterday at 13:37

midz I think you should do whatever you are comfy with, if you would feel better and more relaxed doing it yourself then do it. I was going to do my own until the last minute when I decided I wanted to be pampered and if I couldn't do it on my special day when could I? My trial was great (she took plenty of notes) and my wedding make up was exactly the same so I was very happy.

cicmatag @mrsd2012 I'm going to do my own as I really enjoy doing my own make up, plus I will have the ceremony and the reception 3 days apart so that would mean forking out for a make up artist twice lol. If you, like many of us, don't trust a stranger to do your make up,do your own, but bear in mind that you might be nervous on the morning of your wedding and your hands might be shaking a bit... I find doing make up therapeutic but some people might find it stressful, so go with whatever you want. Have a few trials at make up counters to see what other people can come up with and also to give you some ideas x

mrsd2012 thanks for the replies - I actually find it quite calming and know what looks good on me so I think I will go for me doing it and pay out a little more for a massage or something before hairdos .. I feel better about it all now ty ladies xx

  • Wedding will be on 18 August 2012
    Bradford, West Yorkshire
I have been worrying about this recently as I had my trial and absolutely hated it, i honestly looked like an orange mess! I am going back to the salon this friday as having some waxing and stuff done for my FYEO shoot so Im going to show them the photos i took from after the trial and hope they will offer me another one to sort it out.

in the meantime I went into my local debenhams last night and the lady on the urban decay counter did me a free base trial and it was lovely, so light and flawless, just what I wanted! they charge £25 for bridal makeup which is redeemable against products. I cant really get to the Debenhams on the morning of the wedding though and dont particularly want to leave the venue as we are staying there the night before to eliminate rushing around. The lady told me that she does freelance also but charges £100 for this which is alot but if she did a good job maybe its worth paying??

Im rubbish with makeup but also considered buying the products and just having my bm's help me apply it, 2 of them are very good with things like that....going to see what the current salon say on Friday but currently paniking about this.

To me this was a big thing as I wanted to look flawless and happy with the way I look! Even though people say I am good at doing my makeup for my wedding day, this wasn't an option for me! I have paid out over a £100 for my makeup artist! I did my research on her before booking my trial, (she is a creative write, makeup artist and often does the soap celebrities who always look flawless) and she did not disappoint! Sometimes it pays to pay more...in my opinion!! Saying that though if you don't want to pay out that much money then why don't you get your b/m's to do a trial on you and see how that goes! Failing that I would say to go for it! You know that particular lady will apply it the way you want (check with her she will have all the items she uses in the actual store though as you don't want to get caught out, it will stay put all day . Plus this is one thing that will be in every pic...your pretty face...x
