 Hi ladies,

Readers of a previous thread will know that a couple of weeks ago my venue rang to cancel our wedding date and rearrange it to another day. I really wasn't happy about it to begin with as we'd paid an 80% deposit and signed a contract stating that our wedding will be held on the original date. To cut a long story short they said that one of their major customers wanted to make use of the venue on the day we were meant to have our wedding and said that if we changed the date we could have any weekend we wanted and we wouldn't have to pay the venue hire, we'd only have to pay for food and drink.

Our original date was a Thursday which was £1000 hire but we've now changed it to a Friday which is £3000 hire (as we're getting it for free) because they class Friday as a weekend!!

I complained and said how inconvenient it is as I've booked other suppliers and on the phone the manager said that if we incurred any costs due to changing the date they would pay.

Well I had booked my hen do with the girls for January 2013 and now need to change it to November 2012 but it's going to cost £200 more as the Center Parcs Woodland Lodge we've booked is more expensive pre-Christmas as opposed to post-Christmas.

I emailed the venue asking them to confirm the new date in writing and asked them cover the additional cost of changing the trip. They emailed back confirming the date and stating they'll waive the £3000 hire fee but didn't answer my question regarding the break.

Do you think I should continue to pester them as we did have a contract with them which they have broken, not us! Plus we paid an 80% deposit to secure that date which we can't now have! I'm thinking that they're obviously getting alot of money from this major customer which is why they've broken our contract. I'm not good with confrontation though. I did say in the email that although I didn't want to ask them to pay the £200 I didn't want to fork out that money myself or ask my friends to pay extra when we've all paid quite a bit already.

What do you think?

I would still chase it! You still made a contract with them for that particular date and although i know you are now happy with the new date, to be honest it was very unprofessional of them to ask you to change it. It wouldn't have been unreasonable for services you had already booked to refuse to change/not refund deposits due to the change and thus i feel its down to them to cover the cost. Do they have a wedding co-ordinator you can speak to regarding it? Might as well chance it, they can only say no!
Good luck hunny and happy new year! (this time nxt year you'll be married emoticon )

Definitely! Remind them that they said they would pay any costs you incurred and stress that this is their fault, not yours. Don't let them get away with it! emoticon

@jezibella83 Agree with the others- definately chase the venue to pay! It was out of order that they asked you to change in the first place so they should be doing everything they can to make you happy!

@jezibella83 i agree with the others, you shouldn't have to be out of pocket due to them breaking your contract. I would definitely chase them about it and make them pay the difference like they agreed. Let us know how you get on hun xx

@rosslyn80 that is true, they should of told this other company that on the day they wanted they already had something book so they couldnt book anything else, and if remember correctly from previous post its a company who regulary books with them and it was their annual thing so they should of know in advance before taking the booking of the wedding xx

They should definaty pay if they have broken a contract you potentially go through solicitors to get compensation, would be a lot of hassle for both of you though but if they are not forthcoming it might be worth mentioning this to them!

@jezibella83 I would have a look at the contract and what it says about either party cancelling the agreement. They have broken a legally binding contract. (In my country the law states that if the supplier cancels you get twice your deposit back but I'm not sure how it works here.) And I don't want to scare you but if they've done it once, what's the guarantee that they won't do it again? This big customer of theirs might decide they want your new date as well - what will they do then???
Personally I would demand a full refund AND compensation PLUS I would take them to the cleaners, what they've done is unacceptable and very unprofessional. As you had to change your wedding date, this invalidates your wedding insurance as well (if you have one), I would make them pay big time and look for another venue.
I hope you can sort this out soon hun x

@jezibella83 You should absolutely email them back and quote part of the contract about how the 80% deposit you paid was to secure the date. You can say how you appreciate them waivering the £3000 as they promised, however you'd also like them to pay the additional £200 you have incurred from the hen do which is as a result of them changing your wedding date.

@cicmatag @gina130284 The venue said they'd pay! That is a huge weight off my shoulders, I'm so happy. They said they'd take it off the final bill but I said I'd rather have a cheque as I have to pay for the hen do so they said they'll have to have a word with the finance department. H2b said he doesn't care if it's a cheque or taken off the final bill, as long as we get that £250 he's happy. Oh I'm so relieved! Thanks for your advice ladies xxx

I would of stuck with it, on another site I was on, this same thing happened, and it turned out it was a famous footballer who wanted the date, the venue ended up paying for the whole wedding and paying them I think it was £3000 cash and paid off their mortgage, as the amount they were getting paid and all the publicity well covered the amount, so unless you have signed anything saying you will have the new date, I would get back in touch and say no you want your original date, and see what happens next emoticon
